One of the best place to minggle with locals and taste the true deli of Langkawi.
There is one almost everynight at a different location around the island. To name a few, there is one in Ayer Hangat,Kuah Town,Padang Matsirat and few more. Most places you can see the same traders but it is still one of the cheapest way to get to know Langkawi and its culture.
Most starts at 5:30pm and get busy around 7:30pm.By 10pm most of the traders are preparing to end the trade and head for home.Dont be shy to ask and taste. One of the attraction that you will never regret.
In Langkawi a pasar malam is held on every day of the week at a different location. The ones we visited were the night market in Kuah (Wednesday and Saturday, 6-10PM) and the one in Air Hangat (Friday, 6-10PM). I strongly recommend both of them as they offer a great opportunity to try various traditional delicacies at an excellent price. I recommend that you try the satays, ketupat (glutenous plain rice wrapped in palm leaf, served with beef rendang), pulut udang (glutenous rice with spicy coconut shrimp paste filling, wrapped in a leaf and grilled), and the local dessert called kuih. However, anything you choose will be great, I promise.
We went for the Sunday night market near Mat Sirat. Great food, almost every stand looked really well taken care of. Definitely worth a visit since the markets are everyday all over the island.
As far as markets in Asia go, this is an average market. It offers great street food but the opportunity for tourist shopping is limited. This market moves around various locations on Langkawi island so depending where you are staying you may wish to plan your visit to line up with the closest location.
The roti filled with chicken (cost 3 MYR) and cooked in front of us was delicious. Worth going to the markets for.
We booked a taxi through our resort and then paid our driver to wait for us at 10 MYR per hour.
The night markets are on every night at different places around the island, the food is very cheap and delicious! Lots of locals eat and shop at the markets which is a good sign, make sure you try the satay! We had dinner for about $10 AUD
If you stay long enough in Langkawi, you will realise that most of traders are the same. They move from one "pasar malam" to another.Anyway,it is worth a visit if you like to try local deli and mingle with locals as most are very friendly even though with their limited English.Never afraid to ask as you will surely get the answer.Always have a transport available for the trip back as not all location have taxi stand or station. It better if you hired your own transport.Cheap and delicious food are readily available.
